McIntosh Drive closed to protect flying foxes
McIntosh Drive, Sale, will be closed in an effort to minimise disturbance to the resident camp of Grey-headed Flying Foxes.
Issue Date:
Feb 16, 2023
About 3000 threatened Grey-headed Flying Foxes are currently camping in Sale Botanic Gardens and surrounds, but are particularly vulnerable to heat stress.

In line with Council's recent efforts to support the Grey-headed Flying Foxes currently roosting at the Sale Botanic Gardens, McIntosh Drive in Sale will be closed Friday, February 17, to minimise any disturbance and provide wildlife carers with access to support any bats that become ill from prolonged heat.

Moonshadow Flying Fox Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre will be on site tomorrow to monitor the bats, and ensure they are protected as best as possible from heat stress. Lynne and her team will be available to answer any questions and provide advice, so that you know what to do if you find a sick bat that needs help.

Council's Parks team will use irrigation to assist with humidifying the air if necessary, and will avoid running any machinery around trees where bats are roosting. The aim is to keep the bats cool, comfortable and int rees. Not suffering from heat stress, on or close to the ground.

If you see a sick bat, please contact Moonshadow Flying Fox Rescue or Rehabilitation Centre in the first instance. Thank you for your continued support of the local Grey-headed Flying Foxes.
